Program Description

A 36 week course that offers the student the ability to groom five dogs selected from nine different groups: (Sporting dogs, Hounds, Working dogs, Terriers, Toys, Non-sporting dogs, Herding dogs, Miscellaneous Classes and Cats)

The Ultimate, Top of the Line Equipped Facility. The latest in grooming equipment.

 


Length of course

Day time
36 weeks, 12 weeks per level, 3 days a week
9:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. Thursday to Saturday

Part time and evening schedules are also available

Certificate for each level of Excellence achieved
Diploma received for a successful completion of all 3 levels

Basics of Grooming

Offered upon completion of levels in sequence. Presented in basic, intermediate and advance levels, followed by identification of the difference in grooming the Hounds, Terriers, Toys, Working, Sporting, Non-sporting, Herding, and Misc. Classes of Dogs & Cats.
Bathing, Brushing, and Drying:
Up to five animals a day (Dogs and Cats).

 


Procedures
  • Cleanliness and Safety: Importance of proper procedures, handling of equipment and sanitation in the grooming shop.
  • Tools of the Trade:  Care selection, cleaning and maintenance of equipment. Correct application and handling of basic tools. Demonstrations by various distributors of equipment and supplies used in grooming.
  • Both Retail and Hospital Procedures:
  • Anatomy:
  • Canine and feline basic grooming anatomy.
  • Kennel feeding
  • Proper diet, maintenance and operations.
  • Operating your own business:
  • Topics covered include; Location, Client lists. Filing, Purchasing, Inventory and Advertising.

 


Animal Behaviour

Handling and Control
Basic handling of animal behaviour and the need for safety muzzles in the grooming salon.
External Parasites and their Control:
How to spot and control them and when a vet is needed. (Including up-to-date controls and medications)

 


Styling

Styling, Scissoring, Creative styling & Finishing:
Specific instruction in clipping and scissoring application.
Finishing Touches:
Bows and other seasonal applications, promotional skills and advertising of the grooming industry.

 


Customer Relations

Dealing with the public, veterinarians, other groomers and organizations.
Boarding:
Care and procedures.
Associations and Memberships affiliated with the Grooming Industry:
Topic will be discussed.

 


Other Training

Placement Assistance:
Help will be given in placing the graduate in a suitable position upon completion at no extra charge. Provided positions are available.
Knowledge of Computer:
Pertaining to veterinary clinics, grooming salons and kennels, i.e. Point of Sales (P.O.S) Program.

 


About the Instructor

Barbara Hodgkinson is an International Gold Medallist and Master Certified Groomer, who has been grooming for over 38 years, and for over 20 of those years she has been committed to teaching others. With all this time in the industry it has made her well known by the trade’s people. Barbara was formerly the Canadian educator for the Sunbeam/Oster Corporation and is on the Advisory Committee for Sheridan College and Equipment Advisor for Pet Supply House.
